"Mediatization of the Youth"

Nowadays, when we were asked what is “Media” the first things that may come to our mind was broadcasting or news which is correct. But to be specific media is a medium of communication, a way or a channel through which the message was transmitted.
Last November 21, 2008 there was a symposium held in our school with a title “Mediatization of the Youth”. It was discussed by our speaker Rev. Fr. Christian Buenafe, O’Cram.
Media is a perspective, ideology and a lifestyle. It is a way of life, but according to St. John Paul II, media were no longer a way of life now but a culture. A culture in a sense that it gives great impact to us especially to the tweens (8-12 y.o) or even youth. Media creates a culture because it shapes the landscapes of the children’s mind and it even shapes to certain extent the values and behavior of children.
Before we learn from home, school, church, friends and mass media. Now it change, because we learn first from the mass media, then friends, home, school and the last one was the church which is quite shocking and disgusting. It only shows that media nowadays is the strongest man-made force that can “influence people”. And mass media is the is the most powerful catalyst for modernizing youth culture.
But media had great help or contribution on us depends on the user. It has an obvious advantage and disadvantages. All we need to do is to teach others especially the youth to deconstruct media by simply validate some programs.
